The municipal general cemetery was inaugurated on August 4, 1919, to relieve the burial ground at Spanjaardslaan (1833). Expansions took place in the years 1956, 1972 and 1988.

The graveyard from Leeuwarden where the grave is of Leonard Arthur Townrow is just a few miles away from the military airport, the same airport the Germans where stationed during WW2.
